One of baseball's most feared hitters, Manny
Ramirez earned the Players' Choice Award for Outstanding A.L. Player in 1999
and won his first batting title with a .349 average in 2002. He also led the
league in on-base percentage (.450) during his second Boston season in '02.
Manny Ramirez made the majors in 1993 with Cleveland erupted for 17 home
runs and 60 RBI in 1994. In 1995, he surpassed 100 RBI (107) and 30 home
runs (31) for the first time in his career. He has hit at least 26 homers
and driven in at least 88 runs every year since. In eight seasons with
Cleveland, he slugged 236 home runs, including three in one game twice --
September 15, 1998 and August 25, 1999. He enjoyed a 20-game hitting streak
from August 15 to September 5, 2000. He led the A.L. in slugging percentage
in 1999 and 2000 and won the RBI title with 165 in 1999.
Manny Ramirez joined the Red Sox as a free agent before the 2001 season. He
took an immediate liking to Fenway Park, hitting a home run in his first at-bat
at the historic ballpark as a Red Sox. He hit 40 more homers and drove in
125 runs during his first year with Boston. Manny Ramirez has made six All-Star
teams and finished in the top 10 in the MVP voting, five times, including
both of his years as a Red Sox.
