Expected to anchor the Rangers pitching staff,
Chan Ho Park was slowed by injuries last season, limiting him to 25 starts
and hampering his effectiveness. However, after being 2-3 with a 10.94 ERA
on June 7, Chan Ho Park ended the season with a 9-8 record and a 5.75 ERA.
From Aug. 23-Sept. 17, Chan Ho did not lose a game, winning five straight
games and allowing three earned runs or less in six straight starts. Chan Ho Park finished the season leading the Rangers in strikeouts (121) and
was second on the team in wins (nine) and games started (25) and was third
in innings pitched (145.2.) Before playing for the Rangers, Chan Ho Park was
a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, where in 2001 he won 15 games to lead
the Dodgers while finishing third in the National League in both strikeouts
(218) and innings (234). Both the strikeouts and innings were career highs.
Chan Ho was also a member of the All-Star team, the first Korean-born player
to do so. What makes Chan Ho Park so effective is a moving fastball, a sharp
curve and slider and a changeup. That repertoire has allowed Chan Ho Park to
have a winning record every season since becoming a full-time major-leaguer
in 1996.
